Simple Methods for Design of Steel Gusset Plates. This paper presents two simple methods for design of steel gusset plates. In the first method, the wedge theories are applied to establish state of stress in steel gusset plates. In the second method, a truss analogy is proposed and used to obtain stresses in the single member as well as multi-member gusset plates.
I dealt with this same problem a couple of weeks ago on a smaller scale. I basically ended up buying an entire book on steel connections just to get one little section that dealt with the buckling of gusset plates on the whitmore section (McGraw Hill Handbook of Steel Connections). They have one example problem dealing with the buckling problem. Portable Plate Press • If available, a plate press may be used to replace a plate that is damaged or missing. • Note that the tooth holding value in lumber that has had a gusset plate removed is reduced by 50%. • Thus, the replacement plate must be sized larger than the original to allow the plate to connect into good lumber.

This paper Author: Chiara Crosti, Dat Duthinh. Following the catastrophic failure of the IW bridge in Minnesota Failure of steel gusset plates. bookthe Federal Highway Admini-stration issued guidelines for the load rating of bolted and riveted gusset plates in truss bridges (FHWA, ).
This paper develops finite-element models capable of predicting the behavior of gusset plates Author: Chiara Crosti, Dat Duthinh. Gusset plates can be made into a variety of shapes and sizes and from a range of materials.
Gusset plates are usually square or rectangular, but can be triangular or made into a customized shape to fit the joint. The shape of each plate is designed so that welding or bolts can be applied to different edges of the plate. A gusset plate can form the entire connection or it can be used in Material: steel, copper, or aluminum.
Three types of failure may occur in slotted gusset plate connections to steel RHS and CHS (circular hollow section), namely block shear tear-out (TO) failure of steel tubes along the weld, shear lag (SL) failure causing tubes to fail circumferentially and section failure without any shear lag reduction.
A typical TO failure mode and SL failure mode in welded CHS are shown in Figure A number of studies on gusset-plate welded connections in SSHS subjected to tension have been carried out. These studies are listed in Table 1 with the type of SSHS, number of tests resulting in TO failure and the mechanical properties for the parent (base) and weld metals.
All specimens from these studies were formed by welding an unslotted gusset-plate to a slotted SSHS. Inthe block shear failure mode was first observed in the coped beams while investigating the bearing capacity of bolted shear connections. Later, this mode of failure was also observed in several bolted as well as welded connections, including tension member connection in angles and tees, and gusset plates.
Subsequently, design provisions for block shear failure were. There are several available approaches to gusset plate design. Engineering principles based on the allowable stress design (ASD) method were previously applied to gusset plate design. 7,8,9) In the aftermath of the IW bridge failure event, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) issued a technical design advisory emphasizing the necessity to check strength capacity along with the.

As a result of the structural failure of the IW bridge in Minneapolis inFHWA issued guidelines for the load rating of gusset plates and recommended that the capacity of these plates on non-load-path-redundant steel truss bridges be verified.
The intent of the guidelines is to be simple, i.e., amenable to hand calculations, and safe. Within ten years, or so, of the this paper's publication, the design of steel trusses was revolutionized.
Improved gusset plate design largely displaced true pinned joints in steel trusses. Figure 7, shown below, is probably a good detail for your use. The paper (PDF) is attached. Chapter 7. FATiGUE AND FRACTURE OF STEEL STRUCTURES Fatigue cracks have also been found to initiate from the ends of the gusset plates and propagate into the girder webs. This issue can be solved using impact treatments or grinding the weld termination, as shown in Figure Figure.
In this paper, the authors survey the design strength equations in the various codes. Then, the pertinent strength equations for the gusset plates of steel truss bridges are selected.
Moreover, the authors propose a pair of strength equations for compression and shear block failure for gusset plates subjected to compressive force. A design flaw in the bridge’s gusset plates was to blame.
