The Missouri war axe, a large, thin-bladed hatchet with a short handle, was favored by tribes along the great bend of the Missouri River. The spontoon tomahawk, with its dagger-like blade and curled or winged-like appendages, suggested a fleur-de-lis-shaped battle axe. Detail from the famed wall painting at the tomb of Beni-hasan, dating circa BC, showing men armed with the typical weapons of Canaanites during the period of the Patriarchs. The warrior at left carries an axe with a duck-bill blade, a double-convex bow, and a quiver.

Yahweh's battle-axe and weapons of war had destroyed the last of the Babylonian succession of empires. From that time on, we are in the period of European history. We know how these people developed into the greatest nations, which made modern history they are indeed modern history. The two handed Viking axe, also called the Viking battle axe or ‘Dane Axe’, was large and heavy, and needed both hands to be used effectively. The one-handed axe could also be used for other types of work, but the Viking battle axe was designed exclusively as a weapon of war.

Like most weapons of war, the axe was a common tool used by man in his daily struggle for survival. Its more mundane uses could include building a shelter, clearing land for crops, and at times, it could provide protection. The battle axe is nothing more than an improved version of the standard tool modified to improve its use in war. To our knowledge, this book by Rosalie Bertell, PhD., is the only one of its kind and remains immensely relevant in fact even moreso now than when it was published. How exactly, one may ask, could planet Earth be a weapon of war/5.
